Day 2 at MERLOT

During my second day at the conference, I attended several sessions: 1) use of technology for orientating new nurses in a hospital setting, 2) research findings related graduate student responses in threaded discussions, 3) expanded applications for Adobe Connect, 4) a demonstration of a student response system by Turning Point (turningtechnologies.com), and 5) research findings related to visual, auditory, and kinesthetic online learning using WebCT. Part of my fall CTIP project is to pilot a different student response system (I-clickers) so this session was very interesting to me.
We also had lunch today with the MERLOT Team and I enjoyed hearing their ideas related to our CTIP projects. The team was very interested in Ken’s desire to create shared learning resources related to Native American languages and cultures. The ability to learn and share resources within and between disciplines has the potential to greatly impact education at all levels. The MERLOT resources are worth exploring!

Day II I attended sessions on "Humor in On-Line Courses",Meet the Cell Phone Generation", "Social Networking","Visual, Auditory & Kinesthetic Learners & On-Line Learning- Does One Size Fit All?", "Baby Steps: Introducing Instructional Technology" (again very useful ideas for freshman seminar courses). All these sessions were helpful to me in the development of my hybrid courses and gaining a better understanding of the current techno-generation. As one speaker stated we need to meet the students where they are! Another stated the theraputic benefits of humor even in on line course material, that it has proven to aid in retention and increase interest and even making the professor more approachable.
Just before lunch I attended MERLOT 201, a session to inform attendees of what is available from MERLOT; mobile searches, VOICES ( a blog of sorts), Web services, affliation finder, KEEP, and much more. This I attended just prior to having lunch with the MERLOT team members. Though there is currently no Hospitality Management material on MERLOT it is in the plans and the team seems to feel that myself and my collegues could be the pioneers in this venture as who better than us knows our needs and what we could benefit from such an international sharing of knowledge.
Overall I feel the conference was greatly beneficial and would highly reccommend that most any discipline should check out the MERLOT site ( we are currently partners-so go now!)
